![]() Called the Amarelos Farm it has horses, bikes, and 4X4 motorcycles. Much room to walk freely. The houses are nice, the sights and tastes are good, typical to the Portuguese Southern country life, a short walk from the village of Vaiamonte.
Rocha N'Dali 2002-10-01 FarmPassing Vaiamonte, we can walk a further hundred meters on a dirt track until we reach the gate of Amarelos. Just ring the bell, talk to the TV monitor and finally walk into the farm. There are eleven houses. Warm, almost bright new, all aligned in parallel streets, as in a small village. Whitewashed to Alentejo’s tradition, with a yellow (Amarelo) bar around. Chatting with the owner discovers the reason for this color, typical of Vaiamonte that derives from the copper oxide, which gave it an ocher color. And as if he wanted to keep the tradition, this place could not have something other than yellow bars. Resting on a gentle hill peeking Vaiamonte, enjoy the wide space of the farm. Although there are 11 homes, walk around freely, without being aware of neighbours. After all, we are in the country and this is perhaps why there are plenty of grass and trees. Nothing alien, or having little to do with this region. At night, hear the crickets and the cicadas and manage to see a beautiful starry sky, where clouds are seldom present. The philosophy of the farm is simple. Each in his own pace, without any kind of clambering or stress, even at breakfast. Anyone wanting our delicious, fresh baked bread, can order it the day before. Next morning, at waking up time he will find, hanging at the door a white cloth bag, with the still hot bread inside. Just ask. There is no restaurant, but at our store, you can find all the essentials needed to allow you cooking at your “Monte”’s kitchen. In addition in the store, you will find different cheeses, cured meats and fine wines. Everything is accounted for in the computer and payable on departure. No one bothers with papers, bills or receipts. It's easy. Then, discover the common areas of the farm house. Starting with the large hall where the highlights are on a pool table many times used by Steve Davis (ex-world champion). At the other extreme a giant screen where you can watch the International news or some sort of TV entertainment. Walk out through the wide, panoramic doors giving access to the courtyard, where you can find the swimming-pools… perhaps the best spot on a hot, sunny day. There you can stretch on the long chairs beneath the shady oak trees. Casas - HomesIf you like to sleep until late, do not forget to lock the door ... This is not a problem of lack of security. Moreover, money has not been spared regarding safety, which has been thoroughly taken care of, at Amarelos Farm. The point is that the houses instead of numbers have names of flowers, like marigold and poppy. Some of the guests at arriving might be confused with the designs of houses and walk inadvertently through the door full of curiosity, looking for their new home until they realize that there are already people inside. Well, if it happens, respond in a sleepy way something like "Hello neighbour" turn the other way and continue your morning nap. Consider the episode as a minor field incident. Inside the “Montes” there is enough room to comfortably shelter two couples. The hall-room is comfortable, as well as spacious. The sofa bed serves as a very large bed where three people will easily fit. Each “Monte” has a serious, well-equipped kitchenette. But the best area of the house is the large porch. Covered by the shed and surrounded by a wooden fence. The view spreads through the fields, touching of Vaiamonte´s roofs, extending to the vast Alentejo’s plains, green in winter and golden in summer
On the left side of the porch, large wall keeps privacy from our neighbour's house… There, the grill urges us to try roasting and barbecues. The late afternoon calls to idleness, and with an aperitif in hand it is a feeling to remember. Motorcycles, horses and other suchAll is well, but there are other choices outdoors of Amarelos. Get to the synthetic grass tennis court. It is slower than others, but quite pleasant. IF you want real action go to the 4 wheel motorcycles. Then, out the gate to explore the ways rural neighborhood. Explore at your will, but keep in range of your mobile phone, (Alentejo is a vast province!) although the huge hill that lies ahead of the farm serves as a reference point. Then you can just speed up and dust off the plain. The price is by the half hour… and quite friendly! For most athletes, the biking may be the most appropriate alternative. If you feel like it you can take your own pet. The only restriction is that dogs must be leashed when walking near the “Montes”, so to avoid disturbing the neighbors. There is always the alternative of the kennel, where the pet may be boxed alone, or with the hunting dogs of the owner. Finally, we also have horses. Do not hesitate to take a horse back trip through the countryside. If not, learn to ride. Good rest. Lifecooler |
